Everyone knows the #neutralgirl aesthetic is in — but not everyone knows how to pull it off in a way that feels elevated and intentional
My clients love a neutral space, and I’ll always give them exactly what they want… but of course, I’m going to do it in a way that makes sense — one that has depth, warmth, and personality.
It Starts with Tone
The best way to keep a neutral palette from feeling flat is to understand design principles and color theory.
I talked about this in my previous post, Watch Your Tone — but it’s worth repeating. Your neutrals have tones, and those tones are what bring your space to life.
Instead of treating beige, cream, and taupe like one note, look at them as a color palette. Don’t be afraid to mix shades within the same family — lighter, darker, warmer, cooler. That subtle variation is what creates dimension and keeps your space from feeling one-dimensional.
Add Color (Yes, Really)
Neutrals don’t mean no color. Think of it as using color intentionally.
Earthy greens, soft terracottas, or deep warm browns can bring richness without taking away from the neutral vibe. It’s about layering warmth, not saturation.
Texture as the Secret Ingredient
Texture does what color sometimes can’t — it adds movement and depth.
Layering different materials keeps a neutral room interesting. A ribbed ceramic vase on a smooth marble table, or a cozy brown throw draped over a brown sofa — suddenly, the space feels full of life. Light reflects differently off each texture, and that variation makes everything feel intentional.
Out of Space
The final key is placement.
Think about how your pieces live together — large next to small, soft beside structured, high balanced with low. The spacing between them matters too. When everything has room to breathe, the space feels polished, not cluttered.
Lets Wrap This Up!
You absolutely can embrace the neutral girl aesthetic — but it’s all about doing it right.
Play with tone, layer your textures, and create flow. When done intentionally, neutrals aren’t boring — they’re timeless, effortless, and elevated.
