Don't Fall For It

Don't Fall For It

If you’re like me, you’re not a huge fan of seasonal décor. Don’t get me wrong—pumpkins, garlands, and bats all have their place when hosting an event—but outside of hosting if you want your home to feel updated and cozy without screaming “holiday szn” it can be a bit challenging.

The good news? You can easily refresh your space with a few small swaps that flow with the natural changes of the seasons, while still keeping your home timeless and elevated. Here are three simple steps to transition your home for the next few months—no pumpkin spice required.

1. It’s In the Feels

The quickest way to make your home feel cozier is in the fabrics you use. Swap out light, airy throws for heavier textures—think chunky knits, faux fur, Mongolian wool, or anything plush and touchable.

Notice I didn’t say orange plaid or leaf-print fleece. You don’t need obvious seasonal patterns to make your space feel warm. Stick to fabrics that add comfort and dimension.

2. Faux Art

Skip the sunflowers and holly. Instead, think about stems that look sculptural and dramatic—arrangements that can live in your home year-round. Some of my favorites:

  • Calla lilies (bonus points in black or deep burgundy)

  • Pom-pom dahlias

  • Pincushions (they literally look like sculpture)

  • Anthuriums (with their sleek, almost patent-leather texture)

  • Alliums (perfect as a filler but still eye-catching)

These florals don’t scream “spring” or “holiday.” Instead, they read as art—visually stimulating, dramatic, and elegant, no matter the season.

3. Turn Down the Lights

Big overhead lights are functional, but let’s be real—sometimes they give “hospital vibes.” The magic comes from layering smaller lights that create warmth and mood.

Think of that cozy hotel or restaurant glow. You can get that at home with small lamps on:

  • Accent tables

  • Dressers

  • TV stands

  • Kitchen counters

  • Coffee tables (battery-operated ones are great here!)

  • Console tables

It’s a subtle change, but secondary lighting instantly makes a room feel intimate and inviting.

The Bottom Line

Transitioning your home with the seasons doesn’t mean filling it with pumpkins, leaves, or snowflakes. It’s about small, thoughtful adjustments—swapping textiles, elevating your florals, and layering your lighting—that keep your home feeling fresh, cozy, and uniquely you.

Remember: your space is yours. There are no real rules, so have fun with it—and don’t let the stores bully you into “Pumpkin Central.”
