Are You a Planner?

Are You a Planner?

One of the biggest questions I get when I’m decorating a space is: “How do you know what to buy when you’re shopping for a client?” My answer is always simple: plan first.

Planning is the secret weapon behind every space that feels cohesive, intentional, and effortless. It not only ensures your vision comes to life the way you imagined it, but it also saves you a ton of time, energy, and—let’s be real—money.

Think of it like packing for vacation. You wouldn’t just throw random outfits in a suitcase and hope for the best, right? You’d create a theme or vibe for your trip—beachy chic, sleek city looks, cozy mountain retreat—and pack accordingly. The same goes for designing your home.

When I’m shopping and sourcing for clients, I always keep their design concept front and center. If the vibe is sleek, edgy, and a little eclectic, I’m not pulling pieces that lean traditional or farmhouse rustic. Proper planning starts with knowing exactly what you want out of the space. That means starting with your anchor pieces—like the sofa, bed, or dining table—and making sure their silhouettes and textures set the tone. Once those are in place, everything else should support the vision.

Another key part of planning is your color palette. If you know you’re sticking to earthy neutrals with pops of black, it’s easier to avoid falling in love with something that looks stunning on its own but won’t flow with your space. That’s how people end up with rooms that feel mismatched—they let impulse buys lead instead of the plan.

Now here’s the trick: when you make a plan, stick to it. Of course, small adjustments happen—I make revisions for clients all the time—but one tweak shouldn’t derail the entire concept. The plan is your blueprint, and it should guide every choice you make, from the big pieces to the finishing touches.

Speaking of finishing touches—shopping in-store for accents is the hardest part but also the most fun. I can get lost in those one-of-a-kind finds! But even then, I remind myself: if it doesn’t work for this space, it’s a no. (Sometimes I’ll save it for another client, which keeps me disciplined and inspired at the same time.)

At the end of the day, planning keeps you on track. It saves time, cuts stress, and guarantees that your home is filled with pieces you truly love—not just items you grabbed to fill a corner. That’s the difference between a house that feels decorated and a home that feels designed.
